You may have noticed that I refer to myself as being a Christian. I want to take a moment to clarify what that means to me, and specify what I believe. When I say that I am a Christian, I mean that I am a non-denominational, Bible-believing Evangelical Christian.
I could fill a novel with an explanation of what I believe and why, but for the sake of space, I will keep it to the essentials.
What I believe about God:
- There is one God who is holy, righteous, perfect, all-powerful, all-knowledgable, and always present. He is eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These three are distinguishable but indivisible; coequal and co-eternal. (Genesis 1:26, Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19, 1 John 5:7, 2 Corinthians 13:14)
What I believe about the Bible:
- The Bible is the authoritative word of God. In its original writing, it is inspired by God, infallible and inerrant. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21, Proverbs 30:5, Romans 16:25-26, 1 Corinthians 2:13).
What I believe about Jesus:
- Jesus Christ is God the Son, the second person of the Trinity. While he lived on earth, Jesus was fully God and fully man. He is the only man ever to have lived a perfectly sinless life. He was born of a virgin, performed miracles, was tortured and died on the cross for all people. This act paid for our sins through the shedding of His blood. According to the Scriptures, He was resurrected on the third day, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return again in power and glory. (John 1:1 & 14, 20:28; 1 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 9:6; Philippians 2:5-6; 1 Timothy 2:5).
What I believe about the human condition:
God created humans perfectly good and upright, with a free will. Humans used this free will to rebel against God, thus making a perfect world imperfect and bringing sin and the consequences of rejecting God into the world. The ultimate consequence of rejecting God is to be eternally separated from Him in Hell. This is also known as eternal death. . Our only hope of redemption is in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Genesis 1:26-31; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12-21).
What I believe about Salvation:
- We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and our belief in His death, burial, and resurrection. Salvation is a free gift from God, there is nothing that we can do in our own human effort that will save us. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16, 3:8; Titus 3:5; Romans 10:9-10, Acts 16:31, Hebrews 9:22).
These are my core beliefs – the things that I believe are essential to salvation. Although I do have strong convictions in other areas of doctrine, I believe that they are not essential to salvation.
When it comes to interacting with other Christians, my belief is that the predominate attitude should be that of grace and love. In essential beliefs, we have UNITY (Ephesians 4:4-6). In non-essential beliefs, we have LIBERTY to act as the Holy Spirit leads us (Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22). Finally, in ALL our beliefs, we need to show LOVE (1 Corinthians 13:2).
